I've had the same problem with 3.8.9.6. Going back to 3.8.9.5 was the only way I could fix it too.

@arj: Thanks - so this maybe a firmware issue - or at least a setting we're both using that's problematic. I'm on ADSL running _BT firmware, what about you?

I'm VDSL with PlusNet.

Contacted support earlier today who called to get some more details - it's the first report of issues with this firmware. They've got my config to try and reproduce it.

I'll post if once I hear back from them.
