Im using a vigor 166 in bridge mode on a BT VDSL connection.

I noticed that the IP configuration settings are very limited.
- No default route setting
- No default gateway setting
- No option to set time

After a bit of digging around in the command line options, I can see ntp is set to synchronise the time.

However dns is not setup so the timeserver name cannot be resolved. I also cannot find a cli command to set dns, nothing in the ip command to do this.

Is this an bug/anomaly in the latest 166 firmware version??

I imagine that those additional settings are only available if you set the 166 to "Router" mode; they will not be available in bridge/modem mode.

But why would you want to do that, presumably you are using a "proper" grown-up router behind the 166 ?

Having the correct time is important when looking at diagnostic info. There might be other processes in the background that might require a correct time setting too. Currently using a HH5 with openwrt as bridge modem and having correct time there made diagnosing issues must easier. Simple things as reporting network outages to BT .

Peter, in Bridge/modem mode there are no settings to configure as the device is running as a modem not a router. The modem passes the connection to your router which is where you set all the time and routing functions.

In Bridge mode it still has IP functionality.
You can still use it's configured IP address to access the 'modem' via ssh or http. snmp access should also work, have not tried that yet.
Just hook up the second LAN port to your main router or network switch that uses the same subnet as the 'modem' IP address.
Best to do is to add a static entry in your DHCP server for the 'modem' IP address. This way there is no risk of having the IP address used twice. (unless you manually set it on an other node in your network ;-) )

I've added a default route using the cli to my home gateway. This seems to have done the trick. It now picks up the correct time;

This is one of the 'odd-ball schemes', I alluded to, in your other thread on the subject.

You might wish to check that the Router and Modem will perform a cold-start in this configuration. The last time I tried this method, I was plagued with PPPoE traffic travelling in an ever increasing loop between the two. It wasn't fixable through Firewalling; unplugging the extra cable and re-plugging after startup was necessary.
