Looking for some friendly help!

I need to set up a VPN from an Apple Ipad to my 2930vn router. My aim is to access resources on the IPAD that sit on my network i.e. photos but more importantly to access my router whilst abroad to browse the web. I want to access the BBC Iplayer from my UK IP address as the network I'll be on whilst overseas wont be allowed access.

I have tried to follow various guides that I have found but these have not worked.

What I need to know is;

Will I be able to do what I want to do with a VPN?
What type of VPN should I be setting up? SSL, IPsec, etc?
Is there a better way of achieving what I want to?

Any help with the basics and pointing me in the direction of the right section of a manual or a guide would be very much appreciated and I'll be away.

Which methods have you tried so far? L2TP with IPSec should work, this guide should still be accurate though I expect changes in iOS would put some things in different places: https://www.draytek.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=1983&Itemid=293&lang=en
