Not sure I have the technical persistence to make my own router. Easier to buy and complain about a pre made one
The 2960 is not listed as a current model - is the 2926 Linux ofr DrayOS, and do you think that might impact on reliability?

The 2960 is listed as a current product here https://www.draytek.co.uk/products/routers/load-balancing-routers
and that is why I chose it to fix the 2955's VOIP problems.
It's not new; I recall reading about it in some forum threads somewhere from 2013. But it had a firmware upgrade only a few months ago - to fix some bugs which Draytek routers have had for years e.g. remote admin enabled even when disabled (!). Also while Draytek support have called the 2955 "EOL" (end of line, I guess) they have not said that about the 2960.
The 2960 contains only a few chips and they run cool, so it has no fan. The 2955 generated a lot of heat and had a really noisy fan.

I think they do do that sometimes but it requires taking the lid off

Thanks madexmatt - not sure if I want a 2960 yet. May opt for a 2926ac. But each time I'm about to decide on one, someone come alogn and says they've had issues with that model
