DHCP Server and Relay IP was created by jameswiltshire
Hi,
I have a Vigor 3900 with a few vlans setup. The main vlan on 10.0.0.1/24, i have configured to get the ip addresses from a window 2016 dhcp server. In the lan settings i have turned off the dhcp server and in the dhcp relay section i have set the dhcp server ip to the ip address of the windows server.
I can get IP addresses okay but i am getting a lot of messages in the syslog like;
Vigor: dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.0.0.153 from 80:3f:5d:0f:6c:a1 via lan-lan1: unknown lease 10.0.0.153.
and
Vigor: dhcpd: Warning! Detected another DHCP server: 10.0.0.5.
Is this normal or do i need to change a setting somewhere?
Thanks
James

If your main DHCP server is located on the same local subnet, just turning off the DHCP service is sufficient. DHCP Relay is used where the DHCP server is located on a different subnet / network, so try disabling that.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The main DHCP server is on the same subnet, lan 1, but if i disable the dhcp relay which has the ip address of the dhcp server how will devices know where to get IP address from?
Thanks
James

The devices on that local network will send out a broadcast DHCP Request packet which will then be answered by your Windows server with an IP address

Ah okay. Sorry didn`t know that. I`ll give it a try later as i`m sure the office won`t be happy if i make a change to the settings and it stops working.

I disabled the dhcp relay last night but i`m still having messages about unknown leases. Also some users find it takes a while to get an ip address from the server.
Any ideas where i`m going wrong?
Thanks
