Can Vigor 2900 support 50Mb/s? was created by andrewc
My (Virgin) ISP has recently upgraded my cable connection from 20 to 50 MB/s.
I noticed that on broadband speed tests I am only getting 22 - 23 MB/s.
If I by-pass the Vigor and connect direct to the Virgin Superhub I do get 50MB/s.
Question is - do I need to replace my 10-year old Vigor 2900 or can it be tweaked up to support the new speed? and, if so, how?
The current firmware I have is 2.5.6
TIA
Regards
Andrew

Via ethernet cable i am not sure .. the firewall i think is limited to 24 mbps, try turn off DoS, QoS if they are present (disable & the firewall for testing)
Via wifi it supports only G so that means the max speed is up to 54mbps, so if you are far from the modem may not expect the full speed
Ask the support orinfo@draytek.co.uk for more accurate answer (they reply fast)
If you need to replace it ... you can look the new vigor 2912n (same type hardware as the 2900) but ask for its throughput as well
or the latest 2925n ...
there is and the 2130n ( older model but with firmware up to date, so if ever update your VM service can go over 500 mbps)

Hi Babis
Thanks for responding. The connection is hard wired so not a WiFi issue.
I saw an original review (2004) of the box at
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/draytek-vigor-2900g-broadband-security-router-reviewed-2900g,review-252-9.html
which suggests it is limited to 16MB/s.
As a matter of interest how would i turn off the Firewall component for testing?

Hi Babis
I have now tried all your suggestions but sadly there is no difference in throughput.
I am thinking now that it must be a hardware limitation.
I have emailed Draytek as you suggested but I fully expect that they will tell me to buy a new box. To be fair 50Mb/s in 2004 would have been unheard of!
Thanks very much for your assistance anyway.

Draytek came back to confirm that it is a hardware limitation.
"Buy a new Vigor 2925".
Shame.
