By the way James who provides your internet?
I'm not convinced the problem is actually the router, it could be upstream....

I relation to the comments about disabling DoS I found this post http://whrl.pl/RcVOlN which indicates only the UDP flood defense threshold needs to be changed. Better than disabling DoS altogether.
