2850 to BT Infinity

First of all thanks to everyone who helps out in this community. Sorry to go back to basics here, but I haven't found a forum answer that addresses my needs. I need to understand the basic physical hardware connections before tinkering with any settings.

Knowing I'd probably upgrade I'd bought a 2850Vn which ran OK on ADSL. I didn't manage to get working the features I'd chosen if for (e.g. VPN) but that's another story and not relevant here, but at least I was connected. BT Infinity was installed the other day by their technician using the Openreach Modem (ECI model) and HomeHub3, and they seem to give me a reliable internet connection. The physical connections are;
1 - Master-Socket to Modem; RJ11 both ends
2 - Modem to HomeHub3: RJ45 both ends
3 - Homehub3 to Intranet (my Netgear switch): RJ45 both ends

I've trawled the forums and - I'm sure - tried all combinations (but clearly not the right one), to connect the 2850 in place of the HomeHub3 both with and without the Modem. The 2850 of course uses RJ11 connector for the ADSL/VDSL, Phone 1/2 and Line, and uses RJ45's for all other ports (gigaLAN 1, 2 , 3 & 4/WAN)

(1) Without the Modem I connected directly from the Master Socket to the 2850 with the RJ11. No joy.
(2) With the Modem, I used the RJ45 from the Modem (marked LAN1) into the Vigor WAN1, connecting to my switch through WAN2. No joy.
(3) With the Modem, I used the RJ45 from the Modem into the Vigor WAN4, connecting to my switch through WAN2. No joy.

In all cases, I've followed the settings advvised in the DrayTek guidance http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/kb/kb_vigor_v2850_setup.html.

Can someone tell me which of the above arrangements is correct and perhaps offer advice on what steps I need to take to resolve how the devices recognise each other? For example, I tried leaving each powered off for a few minutes then when back on letting them stabilise for a while before altering settings, but all to no avail. What am I missing?

about number 1 issue see some posts which working for few members

at wan>>general set up not forget to click ok down page to save & also to the page down showing wan>>internet access press ok

If you clicked ok...Try to change pppoe and most important to have the correct user name & pass from your account

You can also use the bt modem to connect it at wan 2 (named by draytek but wan 4 named at draytek modem) then use pppoe (WAN >> Internet Access)
This way the BT modem doing the connection work and the 2850 works like just router
or
use static or dynamic ip at same page but set obtain ip to automatic ( correct pass & user name of course to any case setting)

Switch settings can not help sorry...a BT user should appear soon guide you

Which stage are the lights of front?(flashing or steady)
