There's a "use SSL" checkbox and an "SMTP port" option on the Mail Alert Setup page. However, if I enable SSL and specify port 465 the "Send a test email" function produces no output.
Curiously, when I attempted this a few days ago, the syslog contained an error code 5. I just tried this again now and the syslog simply contains "[WEB]Send test mail" but still no mail is received.
If I revert to not using SSL (and revert the port) then the test mail is received successfully.

Apparently it DOES work... I just asked a support person whose colleague did a test...
This is what he said:
