Vigor 2710n questions was created by maddogs
Hi. I am a new user on the forum, so my apologies if these questions have been asked and answered previously.

My trusty 2800 failed after 5+ years of 24/7 use. I have just replaced it with a 2710n but have found the following;

1. My connection is slower than it had been previously. UPDATE. MTU now set to 1458 from 1500. Modulation set to G.DMT, after I noticed that it was set to Multimode by default. Speed now up but can be improved further, which will be down to my ISP.
2. I am unable to set up a USB mass storage device. UPDATE. Still outstanding. I have seen a few postings that give cause for concern regarding the latest firmware update, also their is a discrepancy between what I have installed and what is the latest version according to the support site, as below;

Router info:
> sys version
Router Model: Vigor2710n Version: 3.3.6_232201 English
Profile version: 3.0.0 Status: 1 (0x495f9fec)
Router IP: 192.168.1.1 Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Firmware Build Date/Time: Oct 27 2010 17:03:51
Revision: 24877 V336
ADSL Firmware Version: 232201_A Annex A

Download release notes:
Release Notes for Vigor2710 series

Firmware Version : 3.3.6.1 (Release)
Release Date : 14th April 2011
Build Date : 22nd March 2011
Applicable Models : Vigor2710, Vigor2710n, Vigor2710Vn, Vigor2710VDn
Locale : UK Only / Annex A Only

With regard to the connection speed, can anybody advice the optimum MTU for this device. RESOLVED
With regard to the USB mass storage, can anybody advise how this can be set up. OUTSTANDING

I have checked the handbook, which only refers to a printer set up ,Mickey's guides, which do not cover this model and the Telnet commands, which do not appear to cover USB configuration.

I currently have the following firmware;

Model Name : Vigor2710n
Firmware Version : 3.3.6_232201
Build Date/Time : Oct 27 2010 17:03:51
ADSL Firmware Version : 232201_A Hardware: Annex A

I have downloaded the latest firmware release, v2710 3361, but have not yet installed it, as the release notes did not refer to either of my issues.

Regards
Dave

How slow was the connection with the default settings? The MTU of 1500 is a little bit wrong but shouldn't cause low speeds - if your line is <3Mbps then I think the 211801 modem code would be the best one to go with, you can get that from the Draytek.com FTP site (or main site)

Now for the USB - the formatting options are relatively limited for it to work with the router - you need to have it formatted with FAT/FAT32 rather than NTFS, it also needs to be a single partition and be MBR formatted (the last is only an issue if you formatted it with a Mac or maybe win7/vista disk manager). Windows usually won't let you format a drive over 32GB as FAT32, but you can do it with this: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
Once it's formatted correctly it should detect on the router and you can then connect to the router via \\192.168.1.1 etc to put files on it.

Thanks Voodle.

The MTU seems to be OK at the mo. My connection varies between 2.2 and 5.5, so I have put that down to time of day and density of traffic.

The formatting issue I understand and do use FAT32, however I had forgotten the 32GB limit on FAT32 and have a single partition of 40GB, so I'll reformat and try again.

My current problem is that I loose connection daily. The router shows that it is connected but I need to drop the connection and start it again.

I have firmware Version: 3.3.6.1_232201 installed.
