Vigor 120 - partially bricked - Recovery possible?

Hi,

I have a Vigor 120 which was working fine until I did a firmware update on it using the file from http://www.draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=71#PdInfo labeled as follows which matched my existing modem code.

Vigor120_V2 Annex A 332201.zip AnnexA is used for modem code 332201

I used the .rst version of the file.

Now, the V120 boots up but does not wake up the LAN port.

If I boot it with the reset button held down it boots and even provides a DHCP address to my laptop but I am unable to make any web connection to the default 192.168.1.1 address, even though this is the server IP supplied in the DHCP configuration offered to the laptop.

I assume therefore that I have partially bricked it, possibly with wrong firmware for this hardware version.

Has ANYONE got any ideas on how to recover from this situation?

If not, it's going in the bin and I will give up with Draytek products.

Are the 4 pins on the side nearest the reset button a serial port, JTAG or programming pins? Anyone know if they can be used?

Why did you try upgrading it? I don't think there's anything to be fixed! Anyway, download the firmware from www.draytek.co.uk and try again; use the firmware ugprade tool.

It does say on the firmware page for the V2 modem that you have to make sure to check which version of the V120 you have, if you put V2 firmware on a V1 version of the 120, that'd probably brick it like you're describing.

It seems like you'll be able to recover it since when youve put it into TFTP mode by turning it on with the reset button pushed, it's given out an IP address - the thing is when it's in that mode, it can only receive firmware and you'll need to use the firmware upgrade utility included with the router tools to restore it.

All recovered.. I'd forgotten about the backup tftp based recovery tools.

As to why I did this... I am using IPv6 and having been issued with a beta firmware with IPv6 fixes in it, I wanted to go to the formal release.

http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/downloads.html links to ftp://ftp.draytek.com/ that in turn has this ftp://ftp.draytek.com/Vigor120/Firmware/V3.2.4.3/ available.

That is the correct firmware for the V1 device.

My mistake was going via http://www.draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=71 where it makes no mention of there being two versions of the device and only offering the V2 firmware.

This link http://www.draytek.com/user/SupportDownloads.php does differentiate, but I saw it too late.

Does this answer the "why" question?

Yes, it does :-) I'd forgotten about IPv6 improvement. Glad it's working again.
