How to monitor WAN1 status? was created by janosch111
Hi folks!

I'm using a 2910 Dual WAN router for some weeks now.
Everything works fine. I've got two ISP with two different technologies (via telephone & via TV cable).
The TV cable connection (WAN1) is a little bit unstable at the moment.
At the same moment WAN1 goes offline my Vigor switches the lines and redirect all the traffic to WAN2. So far so good.
But I'll like to be informed when such a thing happens.

What are the possibilities to monitor the Vigor 2910 for the status of WAN1???
From outside? Or better from the internal LAN. I've got several 24/7 machines there with Linux and Windows...
Which tool or shellscript would do the job?

Please help :-)

Best regards,
Janosch111

Hi there Janosch111, I have a 2950 in a very similar dual-WAN setup.
I personally use a SuSE 10.3 box with syslog-ng and point the 2950's syslog client to that - works very well for me.
Cheers
Simon

Hi Simon,

thanks a lot for your answer!

I've also tested several syslog server.
But I've no idea, how to react on such messages?

What is the content of that kind of offline-message:
Something like "Status WAN1 changed: down" ???

How can I trigger other events on my syslog server based on some trigger words in my syslogs?

Stay tuned,
Janosch111

It should be possible in the paid-for edition of kiwi syslog Daemon, might also be possible in the free edition or at lest during the trial phase.

You can reduce the variety of syslog chatter from most Draytek devices via the admin interface which would make it simpler to parse the messages you are interested in and trigger events like sending an email etc.
