Hey all!

I recently bought a vigor 2865ac so I could pair it with my plus.net (VDSL) connection and a new Virgin Media Cable ethernet line.

I have set them up with session based load balancing and checking with speedtest.net I get the combined speed. (Plus= 60mb Down, 18mb Up, VM= 350 Down, 36mb Up). see here for results:- https://www.speedtest.net/result/11951818589

However, when I actually come to download or upload the speeds are not combined and the upload is slower than 36mb from the VM line. Have I missed something? Or does this not work this way?

I was hoping to use the two lines to utilize the combined upload speed for work (around 50/55mb)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert on this - the few experiments I've tried have all ended badly

AIUI, there needs to be something at both ends, to aggregate two connections - otherwise, it's just two separate, but parallel, sessions. If you run two copies of Speedtest.net at the same time, one should do 60/18 and the other 250/36 simultaneously, if the Vigor's got its act together. I believe :wink:

You could look at something like Speedify , which claims to do it - but this raises a few issues...(cost, security (all your data through a 3rd party), and/or interoperability with your work VPN.)

I guess I was hoping it would do some clever Line bonding thing. Annoyingly all the promo stuff for Draytek, mislead me into thinking you can do that when you actually can't. Yes, you get some good speedtest.net results but it doesn't really work like that.

Oh well, I tried it, it didn't work, it gets returned.

That's a shame - it does work to increase speeds but not for a single session - it can balance to boost speeds for more than one, so peer-to-peer, multi-session data, or multipe user sessions can benefit.

Boosting speed for a single session requires something on the ISP end to provide the high speed link that data would be sent to, then split & sent onto the router with a mulit-link PPP setup, or some other form of encapsulation, for the data to be reassembled at the router end.
The DrayTek routers don't offer that though, usually it would need specialised routers provided by the ISP, as it's going to be specific to each provider's network.

If the work-end of the 'work vpn' was implemented by another Draytek Vigor, the answer might be "VPN Trunking" ...
